GEC DYNAMO & SWITCHBOARD
One of our best finds was an in place GEC dynamo and switchboard, found by a friend of the family on a farm near Leominster, The dynamo was still on the base plate bolted to the floor together with switchboard with all the dials and switches. The original engine had sadly gone but I am pretty sure that it was a 3hp Petter Junior due to a head gasket found hanging on a near by nail, even the original cloth cabling was still in place. Having agreed a price with the owner we stripped all we could out for restoration., the switchboard alone weighed a good 100KGs, everything was loaded up and taken back home.
We had purchased at an early date a Petter M 6 Hp, which all though bigger than we needed for the job we thought they would go together nicely, The dynamo was stripped and cleaned and re-painted and mounted with the engine on trailer base, the original slate switchboard back was replaced with wood due to the original being cracked and far to heavy too mount securely and all the dials and switches restored, When we had finally sorted the wiring out the engine was started and to our relief the dynamo produced a nice strong output. We now rally the engine with a couple of banks of 50 volt light bulbs to give a steady load.
